Diabetes is a dangerous disease with many potential side effects. Diet is one of the main reasons for its development. Worryingly, the disease is affecting younger and younger people. There is currently no known cure for diabetes; most therapies focus on blood sugar control, insulin injections, glucose-lowering medications, and dietary restrictions. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to complications that damage the nervous system, internal organs, and even increase the risk of cancer.
The tragic death of 36-year-old teacher Mias
The sad case of Miasa, a 36-year-old Italian language teacher who taught at a primary school in Italy, is illustrative. She died from complications related to diabetes.
In late 2020, Miasa began to experience symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, stomach pain, and a rapid heart rate. However, she did not visit the hospital, as she was busy preparing students for exams and making up for classes missed due to COVID. A few months ago, Miasa suddenly collapsed in front of her class. At the hospital, they found that her blood sugar was unusually high and diagnosed her with severe diabetes.
Her condition worsened despite medical intervention, she fell into a coma and, unfortunately, died eight hours later.
"She rarely ate sweets" — but she still developed diabetes
Her husband couldn't believe it. Crying, he asked the doctors how his wife, who barely ate sweets, could have become so seriously ill.
After analyzing her daily habits, doctors found that although she avoided sugary treats, her favorite foods significantly increased her blood sugar:
Eggplant (cooked with oil and spices)
Normally, 100g of eggplant is low in calories, fat and cholesterol free, but Miasa regularly cooked it with lots of fat and spices. At 1.50m tall, she weighed around 65kg (overweight). This high-calorie diet and excess weight slowed her metabolism and raised her blood sugar.White cauliflower (fried in lard)
Cauliflower is low in calories and good for weight loss, but she fried it in lard. Doctors note that cauliflower absorbs a lot of fat and its regular consumption in this way is harmful to health.Other high-risk foods that raise blood sugar
White bread – made from refined, not whole grain flour; its frequent use increases glycemia.
French fries – rich in fats and carbohydrates; their difficult breakdown leads to a sharp and prolonged rise in blood sugar.
Canned tomato sauce – just one tablespoon contains approximately one teaspoon of sugar; limited use is best.
White rice
Rich in starch, which after digestion turns into sugar. After consumption, blood sugar levels rise quickly. For people with diabetes, moderate consumption of white rice and increased intake of vegetables and whole grains is recommended.
Diabetes requires careful nutrition and regular blood sugar monitoring. Mias's case shows that even people who don't overindulge in sugary foods can develop serious complications if they don't pay attention to their overall diet and lifestyle.
