As the weather warms, various diseases appear, some spread by insects and others transmitted from person to person.
Data shows that there have been twice as many cases of Lyme disease by April this year compared to the beginning of 2024. There have also been isolated cases of Marseille fever.
"These are typical tick-borne diseases. Both are caused by microorganisms that can be treated with antibiotics."
“After a tick bite, you don't necessarily get Lyme disease, but there is a risk of it. The tick must be removed as quickly as possible,” Dr. Asparuh Iliev, head of a laboratory in Bern, told bTV.
Then, you should watch for a rash around the bite site. The second stage, which is much less common, is for the rash to spread all over the body.
New vaccines in the immunization calendar
Health authorities in our country offer mandatory vaccination against several diseases, including chickenpox and respiratory syncytial virus.
“This was about time to do it. Many people have their children get these vaccines, but not including them in the calendar leads to problems with reimbursement, as these are not cheap vaccines,” explained Dr. Asparuh Iliev.
According to him, the chickenpox vaccine is very effective and protects against complications. The same goes for the respiratory syncytial virus, which is very dangerous for young children as well as the elderly.
"Almost every one of us has encountered chickenpox. It has two manifestations - one is at an early age, when we have the typical rash. After getting sick at a later age, the virus remains latent in our body. Herpes zoster can occur, which is an unpleasant disease and is observed in people with suppressed immunity," he explained.
The vaccine is suitable for any age, but it is most effective at an early age, because that is when the risk of infection is greatest.
Regarding measles cases around the world, he said that it is an extremely contagious disease. When vaccination falls, the incidence immediately rises.
