In a few weeks, one of the most popular cosmetic products among women will face a complete overhaul. As of September 1, the European Union (EU) will ban the chemical Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO), which is a key ingredient in most gel nail polishes sold in beauty salons, Blic reported.
The reason for the drastic measure is recent scientific research linking TPO to serious health threats, including cancer risk, reproductive problems, and hormonal imbalance.
This chemical, which allows gel polish to cure quickly under UV or LED light, has come under scrutiny by European authorities. According to experts, it poses a threat to reproductive health, can cause hormonal imbalances and is a potential carcinogen.
The risk is most serious for manicurists, who inhale the fumes from these products daily and for years. Dermatologists comment that although the danger of allergic reactions has long been known, concerns are now growing about the long-term effects, especially in teenagers and women of reproductive age. Doctors warn that hormonal imbalance can negatively affect fertility and the proper development of the fetus during pregnancy.
All beauty salons in European Union countries have until September 1, 2025 to phase out and replace products containing the hazardous substance TPO.
The ban comes at a time when the nail care market is booming. According to Statista, the global market is expected to reach revenues of $12 billion by 2025, with steady annual growth projected. This means that manufacturers will need to adapt quickly and offer safer alternatives to millions of consumers in Europe.
