The poor milkmaid agreed out of desperation. But on the wedding night, something happened that filled her with real horror…
The girl was barely twenty years old. Her hands always smelled of milk and hay, and her boots hardly dried from the mud. He lived in an old wooden house with his sick mother. Her father was in prison because of debts he could not repay.
There was a lot of talk in the village, but the truth was simple: there was no one to support the family, there was almost no money, and sometimes there was even nothing to put on the table.
The mother was losing weight every month. Medicines were expensive. The girl got up before sunrise, worked on the farm until late at night, but the earned was only enough for bread. Sometimes she just sat by the window and looked at the road, not knowing what to do.Just then, a rich man of about forty years of age came into their lives. An expensive suit, a luxury car, a heavy look of a man accustomed to getting what he wanted.
He entered their home and calmly, almost indifferently, said:
“I’ll help your father get out early.” I will pay off the debts. Your family will no longer need anything. Just marry me and give me a son. I’ll die in a year anyway.
He spoke as if he were discussing the purchase of land.
The girl was silent. She looked at his face, his confidence, and suddenly she felt sorry for him. Forty years. Rich. And yet alone. He reiterated that the doctors gave him a year of life at most.
She accepted. Not for the money, at least that’s what he convinced himself. Either way, he would die in a year. Her father would be released, her mother would receive treatment. What did he have to lose? The wedding was quick and quiet.
But on their wedding night, something happened that terrified her so much that the next morning she ran away from home.
When her husband fell asleep, she could not close her eyes. The house seemed foreign and cold to her. He got up to walk down the corridor and accidentally noticed a light in the office. The door was slightly ajar.
On the desk lay documents.
She didn’t intend to read other people’s papers, but her eyes caught on familiar words—date, signature, clinic seal. She slowly approached.
That was the medical conclusion of a few months ago: the state of health was satisfactory, the prognosis favorable. There was not a word of deadly disease.Next to him lay another document, a contract with a lawyer. It said that if a child is born, all property passes to the heir. If a child does not appear, after a year the marriage is dissolved, and she is left with nothing.
It was later revealed that a wealthy relative had left him a huge inheritance, but on one condition: he was to become a father within a year.
He had used it. He’d lied to her, he’d pressed on her pity, and then he’d just throw her away as a useless thing.
In the morning, the girl did not run away immediately. Instead, she quietly returned to the room, gathered her belongings, and waited for the man to wake up.
When he went down into the kitchen, she was already waiting for him, calm but with a firm look. On the table lay copies of the documents.
“I know everything,” she said quietly. “But I’m not going to leave just like that.”The man turned pale. For the first time, he seemed insecure.
“If you want an heir,” she continued, “we’ll sign a new contract.” My father will be released immediately, my mother will receive treatment, and half of the property will be transferred to my name right now. Otherwise, these documents will reach the court and the press.
The man is silent for a long time. Then he slowly sat down and signed.
A year later, a boy was born in the house. But everyone in the village knew one thing: the young woman was no longer the frightened poor girl who had once looked helplessly out of the window. She was the man who had outwitted the rich landowner and saved her family.
