Israel announces Khamenei's assassination, Tehran responds
Israeli radio "Voice of Israel", which broadcasts in various languages abroad, announced that Iran's supreme spiritual leader Ali Khamenei has been assassinated.
The radio claims that the Iranian defense minister and the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran's secret service, were also killed in the bombings.
Citing its own sources, the Israeli Mako agency also reported that Iran's supreme leader had died following the US and Israeli attack on the country.
"We would fall out of our chairs if Khamenei made a statement live on air. He is no longer with us, but we are waiting for final confirmation," said an Israeli official.
There is currently no confirmed information from independent international media or official sources that Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, has been assassinated.
Amid reports of the death of Iran's supreme leader, local media are reporting his address to the nation regarding the US and Israeli attacks.
There have been a number of reports of explosions near Khamenei's residence.
Earlier, the Turkish news project Clash Report reported that there had been an attempt to assassinate Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The Iranian news agency Mehr denied this and said that Pezeshkian was "in excellent health."
Israeli sources also claim that Iranian Chief of Staff Amir Khatami has been killed. Iran's ISNA news agency denied this, saying Khatami "is in excellent health."
As is known, the US and Israel launched missile strikes against Iran this morning. The Islamic Republic's armed forces launched massive retaliatory strikes targeting Israel and US military bases in the region with ballistic missiles and drones.
There is no official death toll from the strikes. However, the Iranian news agency IRNA reported that a girls' school in Iran was hit, and the death toll could be more than 100.
Iran denies their deaths
Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Massoud Peshmerga of the Islamic Republic were not injured in the US and Israeli strikes, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke in an interview with NBC News after Israeli broadcaster Channel 12 reported earlier that Israeli assessments had suggested Khamenei was "probably killed" in Israeli airstrikes earlier today (February 28).
Araghchi also said live on air that two commanders had been killed in the strikes, but that senior regime officials had survived.
"All the senior officials are alive," he said. "So everyone is in their posts [sic] and we are dealing with this situation, and everything is fine."
Iranian Defense Minister Aziz Nasserzadeh and the commander of the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Mohammad Pakpour, have been killed in Israeli strikes, sources quoted by Reuters reported.
