It was in my grandmother's kitchen drawer. We have no idea what it is.

A cute tool for old-fashioned mornings

Before  cream appeared in supermarkets in jars or cartons , you had to source it  : directly from raw milk, bought at the farm or delivered to your door . And for that, there's nothing more practical (and elegant) than that famous cream spoon.

The principle was simple: when a container of whole milk was left  in a cool place , the cream naturally floated to the surface. This skimmer, thanks to its ingenious shape, allowed the cream to be extracted gently, without mixing everything together.  A precise and meticulous, almost ceremonial gesture , which was part of the breakfast rituals  in rural families .

Cute and vintage designOften made of metal, this cream separator exudes an irresistible retro charm. It has nothing to do with modern plastic gadgets   : everything about it exudes solidity and simplicity.

The long handle allowed you to reach the bottom  of the glass bottle  without spilling, and the specific shape ensured a clear separation of the cream from the milk. At that time, this tool was proudly displayed on  kitchen tables , especially among lovers  of creamy coffee with milk or toast with fresh cream .

Where can you find them today?

These containers have become rare, but they are not impossible to find. If you are a fan  of flea markets,  garage sales  , or are  passionate about antique tableware , look around you: cream spoons are among those items that you sometimes discover by chance.

Antique shops specializing in  traditional kitchenware , flea markets, and even sites like  Le Bon Coin or Etsy –  all these places hold many pleasant surprises. And if you're lucky enough to find one,  don't miss it  !

A nod to a time full of simplicity

Beyond its practical use, this article tells a story. A time when every gesture in the kitchen mattered. Moments when time was spent, when nothing was automated. Moments when cream didn't come from a spray, but from a morning ritual,  full of peace and knowledge .

So, the next time you make coffee, imagine it enriched with a little cream cooked by hand with this old-fashioned spoon… and enjoy it with a touch of nostalgia.
