Liver cancer: Symptoms of the disease that caused the death of Thierry Ardisson

Thierry Ardisson’s family announced his death from liver cancer on July 14. What are the risk factors and symptoms of this disease? Here’s what you need to know.

“Thierry left us as he was. A brave and free man.”    With these words, Audrey Crespo-Mara, journalist and wife of Thierry Ardisson, described her husband’s death on July 14 at the age of 76.    “The illness lasted years. Years. There were changes, treatments. Until the day when there were no more therapeutic options. The devastating blow came on Wednesday, when we realized it was only a matter of days   ,” said his longtime friend and colleague Laurent Baffie in an interview with Le    Parisien.

In the documentary    “The Hidden Face of the Man in Black,”  written    and directed by Audrey Crespo-Mara and broadcast on TF1 on July 16, Thierry Ardisson reveals that he has been suffering from liver cancer since 2012. The crew accompanies him on a trip to the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital (APHP) in Paris in December 2024, where he is undergoing radiotherapy. A few months later, in March 2025, he discovers he has nodules in his lungs.

What are the risk factors for liver cancer?

Liver cancer    “is a tumor with a poor prognosis   ,” according to the French Cancer League. In 2023, 11,660 new cases were recorded in France, 76% of which were in men. It’s important to note that the disease occurs more frequently in livers weakened by alcoholic cirrhosis or viral hepatitis.

According to the French National Institute of Oncology (INCa), alcohol is a major risk factor for liver cancer, responsible for 48% of new cases. Other risk factors include smoking, hepatitis B and C, obesity and overweight, hemochromatosis, fatty liver disease, and a sedentary lifestyle.

Liver cancer is often diagnosed during the monitoring of alcoholic cirrhosis or viral hepatitis. However, in healthy individuals, it is mostly asymptomatic, which often leads to a delayed diagnosis. In cases of so-called “silent” cancer, symptoms may appear and vary depending on the stage of the disease, according to the Leon Bérard Cancer Center.
