To make Washington "more beautiful", Donald Trump asks the homeless to leave "far from the capital"

While he has been making a series of shocking announcements since returning to the White House, Donald Trump made an unexpected announcement on Sunday, August 10, 2025, concerning the homeless living in Washington. Under the pretext of an alleged rise in crime and for reasons of public image, he asked them to leave the capital, promising them, among other things, shelter.

After targeting sexual minorities,  Donald Trump  is now turning his attention to the most vulnerable. On January 20, 2025, the businessman  began his second term  as President of the United States in Washington, D.C., succeeding  Joe Biden,  who had defeated him four years earlier in the presidential election. Since then, the days have been anything but ordinary in the Oval Office, where  Donald Trump  puts his authority into practice: diplomatic, economic, and social measures. Since his return to the White House, the American president has been making a series of shocking announcements and decisions. After banning hundreds of books from school libraries and requiring transgender people to be assigned their sex assigned at birth on their passports, Donald Trump recently targeted the homeless living in the capital on his Truth Social platform.

Donald Trump is telling the homeless to "leave immediately"

While he is scheduled to hold a press conference on Monday, August 11, 2025, to present his plan to make Washington, D.C.,  "safer and more beautiful than it has ever been ," Donald Trump took to his Truth Social account on Sunday, August 10, 2025, to offer a preview of the measures he intends to announce.  "The homeless must leave, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to sleep, but FAR from the capital," he declared, emphasizing the words  "immediately"  and  "far ," written in capital letters. With more than 5,600 people counted, Washington is the 15th city in the United States with the most homeless people according to the annual report of the Department of Housing, published in 2024. The American capital ranks far behind New York with its 88,025 homeless people and Los Angeles, where the number is estimated at 71,320.The number of homeless people in the United States continues to rise, largely due to  soaring rents  that have become unaffordable in many major cities, such as Seattle, Dallas, and Washington, D.C. In February 2025, during a press conference, Donald Trump even remarked that there were  "too many tents [homeless people] on the lawns, these beautiful lawns ," emphasizing the importance of the appearance of the nation's capital, which regularly hosts high-ranking foreign dignitaries. To justify his decision, the American president also cited the rise in crime in the capital, even addressing  "criminals" directly  on Truth Social:  "You don't need to leave. We're going to put you in jail, where you belong."  Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, for her part, denied an increase in crime in the capital, emphasizing on MSNBC that the statistics even showed  "trends in the right direction for each category" .
