I finally learned how to use the sink properly, and it completely changed the way I do laundry

For years, I thought I knew how to do laundry. Like most people, I'd fill the washing machine, add detergent, press a few buttons, and leave. But no matter what brand of detergent I tried, my clothes usually came out dull, rough, or with that faint musty smell that never went away

I recently realized something surprising: the problem wasn't the detergent, the washing machine, or even the water. It was me. More precisely, it was how I was using the detergent dispenser.Over time, this drawer can accumulate thick layers of residue: soap scum, fabric softener, and even mold if the area remains damp. In this case, the washing machine will no longer be able to rinse or wash properly, and the clothes will be uncomfortable

I used to think that a simple wipe with a damp cloth was enough. It wasn't. The buildup of dirt hidden beneath the surface was slowly damaging my clothes and interfering with the proper functioning of my washing machine.

First step: a thorough cleaning.
Cleaning the clothes drawer turned out to be much easier than expected, and the difference was immediate.

This is what I did:

Pull the drawer out completely. Most washing machines have a small release tab near the center. Press it gently and slide the drawer out.
Soak it in hot water. I filled the sink with hot, soapy water and let the drawer soak for about 15 minutes. This helped soften the caked-on residue that had built up over the years.
Scrub every nook and cranny thoroughly. Using a toothbrush and mild detergent, I scrubbed the edges, compartments, and small channels where the water and detergent flow. A mixture of water and vinegar worked perfectly for the toughest stains.
Clean the inside of the compartment. Before putting the drawer back in place, I cleaned the area inside the machine where it sits. This area also accumulates dirt and often smells musty if it is not cleaned.
Dry it completely. Once the drawer was clean, I let it dry completely before putting it back in place.
After that, the drawer looked brand new and, for the first time in months, my clothes smelled fresh and were actually clean.

Understanding the Compartments
While cleaning was helpful, the real revelation came when I understood the function of each compartment.

Most laundry drawers have three separate compartments, each with its own symbol or label:

“I” — Prewash compartment: Use this for heavily soiled clothes or long cycles that include a prewash.
“II” — Main wash compartment: This is where you add your regular liquid or powder detergent. It is released during the main wash.
The flower or star symbol: This compartment is for fabric softener, color protectants, or fragrance boosters. These products are released during the final rinse.
Like many, I used to pour detergent directly into the drum, which prevented the washing machine from distributing it properly. By pouring it into the detergent dispenser drawer, it dissolves evenly, ensuring the soap reaches every fiber of your clothes at the right time.A common mistake: Overfilling.

It's tempting to add a little more detergent, especially when clothes are very dirty, but it's one of the worst things you can do. Overfilling the compartments can cause clogs, leaks, and insufficient rinsing. Plus, it can leave sticky residue on clothes

Instead, follow the maximum fill line indicated inside the drawer. A small adjustment like this can significantly improve washing results.

Results:
After following these steps, the change was undeniable. My clothes were softer, brighter, and smelled better. Even the towels, which used to be rough, became soft again.

This also made me realize how much my washing machine was struggling. Without the residue blocking the detergent flow, it ran more quietly and efficiently.

Now, I make sure to thoroughly clean the detergent drawer every few weeks. It takes me less than ten minutes, but my washing machine still works like new.

A little attention makes all the difference.

Your washing machine takes care of the clothes you use most often (clothes, sheets, towels), but it's easy to forget that it also needs maintenance. Regularly cleaning the detergent dispenser drawer not only improves wash quality but also extends the appliance's lifespan.

If your clothes aren't as clean as they used to be, there's no need to rush out and buy detergent or blame the washing machine. Open the detergent drawer, clean it thoroughly, and you'll see the difference.

It's one of those little lessons of everyday life that changes everything once you learn it; the kind of lesson that makes you wonder how you ever managed without it.
