The consequences of "sleeping with bedbugs" - what the photo tells us and how to protect ourselves
At first glance, the shot shows a young man's back covered in dozens of red pimples, nodules, and scabs. Such lashes are often mistaken for severe acne or allergies, but here the characteristic arrangement—small clusters of bites, many in “lines” or zig-zags—points to another, more unpleasant cause: bed bugs .
Why bedbugs are a problem again
Nocturnal "travelers" - the parasites hide in mattresses, cracks in furniture, suitcases and clothing and come out to feed when a person is sleeping.
Difficult to destroy – they can survive for months without food and are resistant to many insecticides.
Easy to transport – one trip, moving used furniture, or staying overnight in an infected hotel is enough for them to “visit” your home.
What do bites look like?
| Characteristics | Bedbugs | Mosquitoes | Fleas |
|---|---|---|---|
| Location | In "paths"/clusters, often along the elastic of underwear | Single, scattered | On lower limbs, below the knees |
| Itching | Strong, often at night | Moderate | Strong |
| Size | 2-5 mm papules, sometimes with a blister | 5-10 mm | 1-3 mm, with a red dot in the center |
Important! Repeated bites can lead to allergic dermatitis, secondary bacterial infections, and severe itching that disrupts sleep and quality of life.
How to help ourselves at home
Bedroom disinfection
Wash bed linen at ≥ 60 °C.
Use a steam cleaner on mattresses, wooden frames, and crevices.
Professional processing
Combined thermal and chemical disinsection by a licensed company is recommended.
Itching relief
Topical cooling gels with menthol, calamine lotion.
For severe discomfort – antihistamine syrup/tablet as recommended by a doctor.
Preventing reinfection
Place protective mattress covers.
Carefully inspect your luggage after traveling; clothes – directly into the laundry.
When to see a doctor
Appearance of pus-filled blisters, crusts, or redness that spreads.
Fever, chills, or swollen lymph nodes.
Severe allergic reaction – rash all over the body, swelling of the face/lips.
Timely recognition of bedbugs and adequate measures to destroy them can save weeks, and sometimes months, of discomfort. Therefore, at the first suspicious "paths" on the skin, and especially in the case of a rash similar to the one shown in the photo, act quickly - the parasites do not go away on their own.
