Hidden symptom of dementia appears in the mouth: If you notice it, see a doctor immediatelyCheck the first comment πŸ‘‡

When we think of the first symptoms of dementia, we usually think of forgetfulness, confusion, and problems with speech or orientation. However, one of the earliest warnings can appear – in the mouth.

Experts warn that dry mouth, while seemingly harmless, can be one of the early symptoms of cognitive decline and even dementia.

Although not the most common indicator, dry mouth can indicate early changes in brain function, especially if they are not caused by obvious factors such as medications, smoking, or dehydration.

“Dry mouth may not sound alarming, but when it occurs for no apparent reason and persists, it could be a signal that something more serious is wrong,” says Raymond Dacillo, Director of Operations at C-Care Health Services.

This symptom, he points out, often goes unnoticed because it is rarely directly related to neurological disease. However, in people who develop dementia, there may be a change in the perception of thirst or forgetting to drink enough fluids, leading to dehydration and reduced saliva production.

Why is this important?
Dementia is not a specific disease, but a term that covers the entire spectrum of cognitive disorders that disrupt daily functioning. According to geriatric consultant Jim Dunn, early detection of symptoms can significantly help slow the course of the disease and preserve quality of life.

Therefore, if you notice chronic dry mouth – without a clear cause – it may be a sign that it's time to see a doctor.

There's no need to panic, but it's important to pay attention. Oral health is not separate from the rest of the body – on the contrary, it can often be the first indicator of deeper problems.

Oral health is also linked to other serious diseases like heart disease, hypertension, and even some types of cancer. Regular checkups and staying hydrated can help not only your teeth, but your overall health.
