It all started with a BIRD status, in which the investigative team describes the young woman as part of Generation Z and emphasizes that she, like her father, is among the individuals sanctioned by the US State Department. BIRD claims that Irene-Sophie lives and studies in Belgium, and the financing of this life is unclear. The publication also says that the girl's mother received a studio apartment in Dubai.
The status ends with hints about the origin of the funds and questions about who pays for Peevski's daughter's education and stay.
Petkov's reaction
Kiril Petkov reacted sharply, but in defense of Peevski's daughter, although he emphasized his own political position towards the MP from the MRF:
"I really think that Peevski is the biggest political evil in Bulgaria right now and we should do everything possible to remove him from the political life of Bulgaria, but I still disagree with Bird about publishing an article about his daughter. The children of politicians, even the most terrible ones like Peevski, should not be implicated and attacked. It is not fair for children to pay for the sins of their parents."
Petkov emphasized that in his opinion, involving children, regardless of whether they are adults, in political conflicts is incorrect and harmful.
BIRD's counterattack
BIRD's response was not long in coming and was significantly sharper. The platform stated that Petkov's words made it clear that he treated Peevski as a politician, not as a "head of an organized crime group." From there, they recalled the periods of political closeness between the PP and the MRF during the "unification".
BIRD accused Kiril Petkov of "profound ignorance" about anti-corruption practices, arguing his position by saying that everywhere in the world, monitoring the unexplained wealth of politicians' children is part of the essential mechanisms for fighting corruption - including when the children are adults.
The platform emphasized that for Irene-Sophie there are signs of living and studying at an expensive foreign university, with no publicly known source of income:
"We ask who pays? It's not shameful to ask," BIRD writes, adding that it's not shameful to reveal the fact that the young woman uses a different name.
BIRD also recalled its previous investigations related to children of public figures – the sons of President Radev and Borislav Sarafov, as well as the case of Veneta Borisova. According to them, the public should know when young people receive unexplained benefits related to their parents' political influence.
