A serious accident on the Northern Expressway in Sofia has claimed a victim. The injured driver died in hospital from his injuries, GlasNews.bg reports.
The accident occurred shortly after 3:00 p.m. in the direction of Botevgradsko Shose, after the turnoff for Kubratovo.
According to initial information, one of the trucks went over the guardrail and partially left the roadway. Shortly after, a second truck hit its trailer after the driver failed to stop in time. The collision resulted in serious deformation of the cab of the rear truck.
The deceased driver is a Turkish citizen, 65 years old. The other driver, 55 years old, a Bulgarian citizen. He was taken to Pirogov in serious condition.
Firefighters were dispatched to the scene and brought the flames under control. Police cordoned off the area and began an investigation.
Traffic in the area remains severely disrupted, with traffic jams forming in both directions. On-site inspections by the Traffic Police and the State Department of Internal Affairs continue. The investigation into the causes of the serious accident is ongoing.
