We all dream of falling asleep quickly and sleeping as soundly as our partner, but unfortunately, that doesn't always happen.
According to experts, women have more difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Find out why.
As if women don't have enough problems to deal with already. Do you have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep? According to a study by the National Sleep Foundation (USA), women are more prone to sleep problems than men. The reason is a combination of biological, psychological and social factors. Hormonal changes associated with the menstrual cycle (mood swings, anxiety, depression, etc.) and physical symptoms (cramps, bloating, breast tenderness) disrupt sleep. Unfortunately, that's not all!
Why do women have more difficulty getting a quality night's sleep?
Various factors according to the American study
Pregnancy symptoms (nausea, frequent urination, discomfort, etc.) can disrupt sleep, especially during the first and third trimesters.
The needs of the newborn also lead to disruptions. Although fathers also wake up, mothers develop the ability to hear their baby's cries at night, which triggers hyper-attention and makes it difficult to fall asleep.
Hormones are the enemy of restful sleep. During menopause, women suffer from hot flashes that can be unbearable at night.
Menopause also carries a risk of obstructive sleep apnea , which again causes nighttime awakenings.
Mental health. Women are more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression, and these conditions naturally lead to poor sleep.
All of these reasons could explain why you're not sleeping well! Remember, though, that everyone wakes up at night and sleep patterns vary from night to night and/or person to person. This doesn't necessarily mean there's a serious problem. Monitor your sleep and if you feel chronically tired or have concerns, talk to a professional.
