No. 65 or 75 years: the traffic code has decided that this is the maximum age for driving

The important issue of road safety for older drivers is once again on the agenda. While France adheres to the principle of a lifetime driving licence, the Netherlands has taken a radical measure: some older people are no longer allowed to drive trucks. This decision could be the start of a European revolution in driving license regulations.

Netherlands: People over 75 can no longer drive trucks

It's official: Dutch drivers over the age of 75 are no longer allowed to hold a C or CE driving licence, which entitles them to drive trucks or vehicles with trailers. This decision, made in accordance with the Dutch Road Traffic Act, is based on public safety considerations.

In case of violation, serious sanctions are provided:

  • Fine do 1200 euro
  • Withdrawal of driving license for a maximum of 8 months

Older drivers can still drive passenger cars or two-wheelers (driving license A or B), but are subject to regular medical examinations from the age of 60, and for professional drivers from the age of 50.

Why this measure? Disturbing numbers

Dutch authorities are relying on alarming data. The risk increases with age: slower reactions, decreased vision, and decreased alertness. This observation applies across Europe.

A striking example: in the Netherlands, more than 400 road deaths were caused by drivers over 75 in 2021. These figures are once again sparking debate about possible age limits.

In the Netherlands, C-license holders must undergo regular medical checks from the age of 50. However, after reaching the age of 75, the license is automatically withdrawn, regardless of health status.

Towards mandatory driving tests for seniors across Europe?

The Dutch decision has sparked debate. Some welcome its common sense in protecting all road users. Others condemn it as a discriminatory measure based solely on age, without regard to each driver's actual capabilities.

Brussels is closely monitoring the situation: the European Commission is working on a driving license for seniors. This involves a limited-validity driving license (renewable every 5 years) that is issued subject to:

  • Medical check-up
  • Review of knowledge about road traffic regulations

Driving Freedom vs. Security: The Dilemma of the Future

With the growing number of older drivers, the challenge becomes increasingly complex: how can we guarantee freedom of movement while also ensuring road safety?

The Netherlands has made its decision, and other countries are closely monitoring the situation. What if this measure becomes the new norm in Europe? This question is becoming increasingly relevant as the population ages and road safety becomes an increasingly important topic in European politics.
